After the Vukovar Rowing Marathon was cancelled in the previous two years because of flooding and then strong winds, this year we were back rowing on the Danube. We took on the 26-kilometre course with our club eight in the Cities category and in a combined crew with our friends from VK Rama.
We have been coming to Vukovar for years, to a gathering that combines racing with remembrance of Croatian defenders and the members of HVK Vukovar who were killed or went missing. Back in our 2015 report, we wrote that this marathon means more to us than rowing alone. This year's visit continues those gatherings and friendships.
Our eight finished second in the Cities category and fifth overall, with a time of 1:52:30.8. The combined NGU / Rama crew finished fifth in the Open category and tenth overall, with a time of 2:22:48.6.
We thank our friends at HVK Vukovar for their hospitality and for organising the marathon. Thank you for bringing us together on the Danube year after year — we look forward to meeting again!
